Morrissey on a Tuesday

24 Jan

While I appreciate hearing Mikel Erentxun’s rendition of “Esta luz nunca se apagará” from time to time, it does not bring a smile to my face like hearing anything by The Smiths.  My early morning foul mood was, ironically, brightened by hearing Morrissey signing “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now.”

You both might want to see “Is It Really So Strange?” by William E. Jones, it’s available via netflix if you have that. It’s not the best film, but it does document an Eastside phenomenon, the Chicano fascination with a mopey British singer. I think that appeal needs to be explored much more thoroughly, but I for one have all those Smiths records on LP, what a damn cliché!

The ironic thing about Morrissey’s depressing music to me is that it always makes me happier. It’s probably because I associate it with a great time in my life (undergraduate years) and my best friends.
