A friend from Ohio had occasion to work in Los Angeles for a summer a few years back. When I visited with her half way through her stint, I asked her what she had observed about my hometown.
She mentioned all of the westside restaurants she’d gone to and the fabulous homes she’d seen, but noted with interest that she was most impressed by the purple trees.
As we drove around Pasadena, she couldn’t get over the color these trees added and couldn’t shake the feeling that she’d been missing out on something her whole life because she’d gone 30 years without seeing such a tree.
Well, it’s that season again. Here are the jacarandas and a picture of how they make it look like California has purple snow in the summertime (ok, you can’t exactly make snow angels, but the flowers do cover up the grass nicely).

I’m visiting from Houston, Texas and we also saw them from the airplane too! And I would like to find more about the seed to take them back to Houston.
we have bright yellow jacarandas in S. Florida. These are a beautiful “change”.
where are these pictures taken?
If I recall correctly, it was in Pasadena, either California or Del Mar Aves. off of El Molino.
We were in CA last month. I noticed all the purple from the plane. I couldn’t wait to see them up close. So beautiful. Reminded me of the Cherry Blossoms we get in the early spring here in D.C. We get pink snow and you get purple ones. Thanks for dropping the name. Nobody knew what the trees were called.
We visited from Alberta Canada and totally fell in love with the trees. Saw them at first from the airplane…looked just beautiful from the air. We got there at the right time…they were in full bloom and had just started falling. Would love to have those back home

i was just telling my daughter how much i like those purple trees. they have some at the park near our house.
There’s a jacaranda tree right outside my house. As a little kid, I always played with the fallen blossoms until the “milk” would come out. I can’t stand the rotting blossoms, though. They stain the concrete way too much.
I love the purple flowers on the green grass. Totally psychedelic – especially at 8am on the dog walk!
The jacarandas and their purple blossoms make me smile, but if I had to park under one I wouldn’t be smiling.
