No Judgments, Just Run

12 Mar

My back’s feeling better and I’m running again.  Trying for five days a week, a few miles every day.  I hate it, hate it, hate it, but it’s helped me lose a dozen pounds in two and half months.  Did I say I hate it?  In any event, here are some of the tunes that get me through it.  Say what you want about my musical taste, but it makes the hour fly by.

  • You’re Timeless to Me–John Travolta and Christopher Walken (Nothing like thinking about Travolta in drag to take your mind off of treadmill tedium);
  • Race Car Driver–Girl In A Coma (Girls can rock!);
  • Supermodel–Jill Sobule (Got to dream about what I’m gonna look like after this regimen);
  • They Can’t Deport Us All–Chingo Bling (“My daddy said ‘jes.’ No dad, you’re supposed to say ‘yes.’  We’re busted.”);
  • Stayin’ Alive–Teddybears remix of the Bee Gees (That just sounds funny);
  • I Got Rhythm–Lena Horne and Q-Tip (Reminds me to be creative in how I think about classic ideas);
  • I Want You To Want Me–Cheap Trick (No reason needed);
  • Insane in the Brain–Cypress Hill (Helps keep people away from my treadmill if I sing it loudly enough); and
  • The Walk–The Cure (The best 80s band ever).

    You won’t believe it. I’ve dropped another 15 since then. I’m officially the lightest I’ve been since college. Makes the 6 a.m. trips to the gym a little more bearable to see these results.

    I love The Walk, one of my favorite Cure songs.
    I’m always impressed by the early morning joggers I see here in Lincoln Heights and the Chinese senior citizens doing their stretches up and down the sidewalk. I admire them but I can’t ever imagine myself joining them!

    With the longer days, I really don’t have an excuse not to go running or taking long walks. I got a high school nearby, so I used to run a few laps, then walk some.

    I like the playlist. GIAC makes me want to dance.

    I hate it that I don’t have enought time to get my runs in anymore. And I seriously need to run for two major reasons:
    #1 – I still have a whole closet full of pre-baby clothes that I WILL fit into again. and…
    #2 – running is therapy and it keeps me from going totally ape-shit when baby #2 decides he wants to get up at 4:30am and just chat with me…..
    So, be happy that you have the time to run and don’t have to fit it in around the schedule of baby #1, baby #2 and husband…
    And I vote for Elvis, “A Little Less Conversation” (I know, I know…overplayed because of “Las Vegas” but still awesome) and “Hooked on a Feeling” the Neil Diamond version.

    Thanks for the tips! Will try those out as well to break the monotony. As for outdoor running, find it so hard to do. Running outside means that you can end up far away, and then have to make your way back. At least on a treadmill, I’m right where I started when I get tired.

    oops do that circuit of 6 machines at least 3 times.

    I hate running outside or on a treadmill, but I do it to stay in shape. I do 15-20 minutes of, like Taco Sam wrote, running then walking, but more like 3-5 minutes of each.
    Then I jump on the weight machines, I go through at least 6 different machines, one will have me pushing the weight, the next pulling, low weights, 15-20 repetitions, no breaks, keeping the heart pumping. Results will come fast.
    Keep it up.
    I love “The Walk” by the Cure, such beautiful noise.

    You hate it?? Ahh, that’s not good. I just started running again, too, after a few months off. My unsolicited suggestion is to lose the treadmill and go outside and run. Its liberating to feel the wind in your face and you get to smell the flowers and interact with the world. I also went to a running store where they watched me run on the treadmill for a minute or two, then fitted me with the correct shoes. I then paid like $10 for a pair of awesome running socks. Those three things made all the difference in the world. I never get blisters and my feet never ache.

    I ran 5 5k races last year. It was fun to compete and get in shape at the same time. You can also interval train to build endurance real fast. 1 minute running, 1 minute walking, and so on. Soon, your endurance will come in no time.

    Lately, I’ve been listening to audio books while I run. I focus on listening which takes my mind off of running almost completely. Recently, I listened to and finished Siddhartha by Herman Hesse while running.

    Great music choices, very eclectic.
