Old News, But Still Hysterical

I know, I know, way behind the curve on this one, but “Pitch Perfect” is a hysterical movie.  I don’t care about the political deconstruction of screen time.  Fact is, that’s a pretty awesome group of women getting to carry a movie.

Plus, it has lines like this:

“I ate my twin in the womb.”

“I set fires to feel joy.”

“You want to see a dead body.”

“I did time in county.”

“Well… sometimes I have the feeling I can do crystal meth, but then I think, mmm… better not.”

Next up, screening 301 at my house.

Mosquita y Mari

Finally, someone’s putting together a movie set in Southeast L.A. with young lesbian latinas at the story’s core.  Follow the link to the pre-trailer for  “Mosquita y Mari” (and yes, that’s Huntington Park).

If you don’t want to click over, I’ll put a description of the movie’s story here:

Set in one of the most vibrant immigrant Latino neighborhoods in Los Angeles, Mosquita y Mari tells the story of two 15 year old Chicanas growing up in H.P. – Huntington Park. When Yolanda Olveros (15) meets her new neighbor Mari Rodriguez (15) all they see in each other are their differences. An only child, sheltered Yolanda’s sole concern is fulfilling her parents’ dream of a college-bound future. With her father’s recent death, street-wise Mari, the eldest of three, carries the weight of her siblings as their mother works to keep them above water. But despite their contrasting realities, Yolanda and Mari are soon brought together when Mari is threatened with expulsion after saving Yolanda from an incident at school. The girls forge a friendship that soon proves more complex than anticipated when the girls unexpectedly experience a sexually-charged moment between them. At a loss for words, the girls ignore their moment and move on to become best friends, unaware they have set in motion an unstoppable journey of self-discovery.

The creators have a Kickstarter campaign going to help supplement some grant money and get this story made.  Please donate whatever you can.

Oscar and Me

Because you can’t say anything about the Academy Awards without first identifying what you are wearing, I am in $5 gray sweatpants that my mom got in Chinatown, an ESPN football t-shirt that I bought in D.C., and the Target booties pictured below.  I’m having a glass of Malbec with some dulce de membrillo and cheese.  Now, with that out of the way, my random thoughts on what Oscar means to me:

  • It’s an occasion to scare the bejeezus out of my sister when she thinks I’m watching the show and it turns out I am really just talking to her while I sleep (yes, I sleep talk).  She doesn’t realize that she’s talking to a zombie until the next morning when I ask who won (truth be told, this last happened in the early 80s when “Terms of Endearment” won, but it’s a great Oscar memory);
  • It’s an occasion to remember sitting next to Melanie Griffith at the Oscars in 2000 (I was a seat filler) and wondering about her age because her hands looked like chicken’s feet; and
  • It’s an occasion to get all mad when some man who clearly looks under the influence takes the opportunity to get all overly touchy with some actress (i.e., Adrian Brody with Halle Berry a few years ago and Gary Busey with Jennifer Garner this year).

Good times.

You’re Kidding, Right?

Driving home from work today, I saw this billboard off of Huntington Drive just inside El Sereno.

I did a double take. 

The text made it look like an ad for a horror film, but I wondered whether the letter P and the number 2 were really boldly emblazoned 10-feet up. Did that mean this was actually advertising a movie titled “P2″? Or was this a joke–like some kind of psychologically-twisted ad for a nutritional supplement?

You see, in Spanish, “P2″ translates literally to “pe-dos.”  That means gas–the kind that comes from humans, not the kind cars use.

Sadly, after some research I found out that the movie’s name is actually “P2.”

This is what happens when you don’t have any Spanish-speakers working anywhere near where movies get made and marketed.

Good job, Hollywood. Keep up the good work and continue to advertise for flatulence in predominantly Latino neighborhoods.
